About Us

Chanter Magazine was founded in 1957, and is the oldest and longest-running student publication at Macalester College. Publishing semesterly by the Mac community, for the Mac community, we are completely student-run and organized. We are proud to provide our fellow students the opportunity to experience the process of submitting creative work to an editorial, and we are always excited to acknowledge and honor those efforts with the greater Mac community.

Each semester, we accept original submissions of prose, poetry, and visual art from current Macalester students and hold weekly open meetings to read, discuss, and vote on each one in a blind-selection process—we are committed to limiting bias during this process and remove all identifying information in advance. All are welcome to join these discussions whenever they are able.

Near the end of the semester, our board and staff members come together to copy-edit and layout the magazine before hosting a public release party with snacks, live music, mingling, and presentations of a selection of featured student works along with a guest presenter from the Macalester community.

Submission deadlines and release party dates are announced on social media, in the Mac Daily, on the Macalester events calender, and on Chanter's GCal. Print issues of the magazine are available at the release party with remaining copies distributed for free on campus on the Monday following; the digital edition goes live on the Chanter website shortly before the release party.
